Partygoers boogie down to disco sound

7/21/04

Momentum 4 Life and the Darin Jon Studios brought a new twist to the fund-raising scene with a benefit for the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.

The sound of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" told it all, and DJ Peter Brie and Solid Gold Sound kept the beat going as the healthy, attractive crowd seldom stopped dancing. There was so much energy bouncing against the walls, I wanted to capture some in a jar and take it to the next party.

No surprise, Momentum 4 Life was formed from various healthy athletic activities that included a group of mothers who began running, pushing their babies in strollers, as well as support groups all the way from charity runs to triathalons.

Central to the evening was the idea that one person can change the world, supported by featured speaker David Wagner, the author of "Life as a Daymaker: How to Change the World by Simply Making Someone's Day."

The theme was compatible with Momentum 4 Life's purpose, which is a belief that every individual can make a difference in themselves, their family and their community by living a healthy lifestyle.

Three "behind-the-scenes" staff members enjoyed a makeover: Maria Long, the council's director of special events; Isabel Blagborne, coordinator of community outreach; and Ramon Velazquez, Teen Court program manager for the council.

The week before the benefit, Darin Jon provided the hair and makeup transformation; Wendy Foster and King Tux, the clothes; Dayna Jordan, massages; Dr. Stuart Sato donated the teeth whitening; facials by Skin Resolutions; manicures by Ruth Clincy; personal training by Liz Lauderdale; and Bryant & Sons loaned $150,000 in jewelry for the festive evening.

Catherine Remak emceed the party which was held at Fess Parker's Doubletree Resort. Dawn Shroeder was the inspiration and coordinator for the successful fund-raiser that had casino gaming tables, run by Casino Knights, for those not dancing.

Among the guests I spotted were Lynda and Rusty Fairly, Stan Weinstein, Lois and Eric Abbott, Debby Davison, Sheriff Jim Anderson and his wife Lori, Judy Pesce, president of the Council, Penny Jenkins, executive director of the council, Greg Hackethal, Cathy Downard, Janice Beaty, Marie Ann Strait and Charles Browning, Kelly Fuller and Jonathan Stokes.
